Aoiz / Agoitz

Experience the Irati riverbed

Here, the waters flowing down from the Pyrenees encounter a landscape of stone-paved paths and bridges that have witnessed the passage of centuries. With its old town of cobbled streets and bridges that seem suspended in time, Aoiz is a haven of tranquillity in the mountains that does not sacrifice the life of a vibrant community. It is the perfect gateway to the Pyrenean valleys, a place where wood, water and stone tell stories of craftsmen and freedom.

Aoiz general information

Our municipality lies on a plain that acts as a link between the Pamplona basin and the valleys of Arce and Roncal. The town’s identity is recognised in its historical importance as the seat of the ancient Cortes of Navarre and in an urban layout that was walled until the 16th century. To be in Aoiz is to witness the coexistence of stone heritage and the vitality of a society that keeps its traditional customs alive, where language and culture intertwine with the natural ease of those who inhabit the mountain borderlands.

What to see in Aoiz?

The town offers a fascinating tour ranging from medieval engineering to Gothic spirituality.

  • Bidelepu Bridge: This medieval four-arch structure over the River Irati stands as a clear record of the ancient trade routes. Its fine masonry, a witness to the flow of the water, integrates the river landscape into the town’s technical heritage.
  • Church of San Miguel: It preserves elements of the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Inside, the High Altarpiece and the Romanesque baptismal font coexist with works by Juan de Anchieta, showcasing the artistic splendour achieved during the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Irati riverside walk: A path that runs alongside the riverbed, offering views of the local biodiversity. It is not presented as a tourist attraction, but as a space where locals enjoy the cool riverbank air throughout the seasons.
  • Old town and emblazoned houses: A stroll through the town centre reveals ashlar mansions with pointed doorways and Baroque windows. Of particular note is the house of the Argamasilla de la Cerda family of the Order of the Sword, a Renaissance palace with an L-shaped layout that bears witness to the nobility of local lineages.
